In the small amount of time that I have lived in the San Salvador area, I have come to discover a secret that I will share with you: the best encurtido para pupusas is at Pollos Real. Of course, you can eat pupusas on every other street corner, but the salad and tomato sauce greatly varie in quality and that, my friend, can ruin your pupusa experience. However, I have eaten at Pollos Real about 8 times now (particularly the one that is down the street from Plaza Merliot, by the roundabout with the 24 hour Mr Donut (the modern one) and I can say that they do it right. Its this one.
Their specialty is chicken...however I go for the pupusas. For a restaurant, they are very reasonably priced: $0.90 each. I usually ask for my custom made "chicharrón con queso" pupusas with a glass of horchata (they have the best I have tasted too). A friend of mine always orders pupusas de ayote (squash) and really likes them!
